A unique tale of defying odds to find success

My story that I am going to share with you all it will amaze you that even I haven't heard but experienced it. hello my name is vidisha baliyan as a kid I was little different from others and my parents realized this at very young age when I was around 5 years old my parents took me to doctor and he declared that I have hearing-impaired. now I was a child and I was facing difficulties but I didn't realize that it is just the beginning of my journey. so my parents admitted me in the normal school as I started a little but not fluently. initially in school everything was normal but eventually I was turned termed as slow learner, and people started bullying me. I was alienated from most of the activities it was more like I was physically present but not mentally. when I was in junior school teachers used to write on blackboard I used to copy and write it. but when she started to dictate, I started to miss out on things. Either I had to lip read or write and it was getting difficult to do both simultaneously. my peers were way ahead and I just couldn't manage with the pace. my peers weren't that helpful either because they used to get irritated and I was just left puzzled about what to do and how to manage things. I want to mention this that those who are deaf have difficulty in speaking also and if I used to say something to my classmates they couldn't understand and if they said something to me I couldn't understand. one thing that kept me going from the very beginning was the will to do and achieve things. Of course I used to feel disheartened and there were countless no. of days when I used to cry and I felt like quitting but I didn't quit. and this is my message to you all, every second you work hard and each action you take before quitting will help you succeed in life. many people who have disability are perceived as inferior from others and they are looked down upon slowly these things bog you down and even you start believing it that yes, you are less talented compared to others but rather you are gifted differently. I realized this at very young age itself. so eventually I gained interest in sports and I started playing basketball I was very good at it, but few things were out of my choice since I went hearing impaired. I could not respond to my team players when they wanted me to pass the ball. since basketball is team game and you have to pass the ball whenever my team members wanted me to pass the ball I couldn't give because I am hearing impaired. by that time I decided I had to play if not basketball which involves a team maybe some sport where my individual strength matters and that's how I started long tennis. I used to travel for 2 hours for practice tennis at times I used to get late so coaches and other team mates they used to mock me and ask why do I wear hearing aid. I used to feel bad a lot of times and at times I used to avoid them because I lacked confidence on my speech. these were the kind of problems that I had faced.  but all these times my family supported me. and constantly reminded me that you will face problems but focus should be only on positive things. I was an average player but I worked hard. but I never gave up and put in more efforts in my workout and exercises. and I reached nationals and secured silver medal. I was not good in academics because there was a lot to understand and learn and because of lack of listening it was difficult for me. but sports gave me and identity and gave me the confidence I was able to move ahead because of sports and it makes me proud. whenever I receive awards it reminds me of all the struggles, efforts that I had put in. my efforts really bore fruits I have won silver medal twice in national and then I god selected for deaf Olympics. I got back injury and I had to leave sports but I wanted to do something, In childhood everyone stands in front of the mirror and dress up, act for hour. even I used to do all these things but I got a chance to fulfill the same now. So, I heard about Miss Deaf world. the transition from a sport person to beauty pageant was challenging. it was not easy to change myself on every level both physically and emotionally. from a rough tough personality to delicate personality was not easy. I learned sign language because it was required for the interview. I had to work on my walk, etiquette, dressing, sense. it was challenging for me but I worked hard. I didn't have much time but because of my efforts I got selected for miss deaf world. when I was crowned, it was more like I used to think and fascinate about wining the pageant and reeving appreciation. I knew I could only achieve these things in my life because I never failed to put my 100 percent effort and nothing bogged me down. I want to give this message to the world that in my life I was giving with two options, few things that I didn't choose in my life.  my hearing aid, complication and difficulties that came along with it was something that I did not choose.  but I worked on all the things I had control over I knew I was a slow learner and that's why I put in more efforts, I knew I was good in a sport and I did not give up but kept my persistence.

You can achieve anything in life given you choose to fight and act upon it. I want to tell you one more thing, whenever someone tells you that you can't do anything ignore such things and in my case I was little lucky because I was not bale to hear most of it these things will never matter everyone who said I can't do it because it's tough I proved them with my effort that I got a position in deaf Olympics and I won miss deaf world title. and I am the first women from India to achieve this title, if you believe in your efforts then you can do anything in life.
